Evolution to Survive or Stagnation and Decline?

Charles Darwin taught us that species need to continually evolve in order to thrive -  and develop different skills and attributes to match their environment and new challenges. Failure to do this results in lack of success or even extinction!

Similar principles apply  to a business - at each stage of evolution the challenges, resources, skills and strategies required are significantly different.
SPS defines these stages as:
  • Start-up
  • Early Stage
  • Growth
  • Maturity
  • Dominance
  • Decline

In many companies the resources, skills and strategies available don’t change as the company progresses – and as a result the company fails to evolve as well as it should, stalls or even declines.

Then, the environment around  the business changes. Having failed to evolve, the company is not fit for the new environment and starts to decline.

  • What phase is your business in?
  • Has the business evolved as it has developed?
